What will I Learn On The Course?

On the course your instructor will help you to drive in a smoother more planned way, not only helping to reduce your motoring costs but also making your journeys safer. Some examples of the many techniques taught are below:

Revs and Gears

All engines are at their most fuel efficient at lower revs; to keep your engine revs low you will be encouraged to change up the gears earlier and also avoid unnecessary gear changes.

Planning Your Braking

Fuel savings can also be made by braking gently and spreading your braking evenly; to avoid heavy or unnecessary braking your instructor will give you tips on how to look ahead more and plan your speed adjustments.

Anticipate

You will learn how to anticipate road conditions and drive smoothly, avoiding sharp acceleration and looking well ahead.

Some Fuel saving Tips:

  • Maintain a constant speed if the traffic and road conditions allow. The most fuel efficient speed for most cars is around 45 - 55mph.
  • When stuck in a traffic queue for more than a minute switching off the engine will save fuel and reduce emissions
  • Avoid using your cars air conditioning system unnecessarily; using air conditioning for long periods significantly increases fuel consumption
  • Plan your journeys to avoid busy times, road works and getting lost!
  • Avoid short journeys your car is least efficient when it's cold, it can take up to 7 miles for a vehicle to reach its optimum temperature
  • Keep your cars service schedule up to date. Your engine will be more efficient and a good service record will enhance the value of your car when you change it
  • Keep a regular check on your tyre pressures, this is very important for driving safety and can also save you around 3% on your fuel costs
  • Keeping your windows and sunroof closed will make your car more aerodynamic; also remove roof racks and bike carriers when they are not being used
  • Modern engines don't need to be warmed up before you set off - just start up and go
  • Avoid driving with unnecessary weight in your car as this will make your engine work harder and use more fuel
